What's On

Monday, 5th Nov 2012 - Tuesday, 6th Nov 2012

The continuing trend toward urbanisation has brought to the fore the linkages between human societies, the technological world which they have created and live in, and the natural environment. Understanding these linkages is crucial to the survival of our species. Recent events (hurricane Katrina, Fukushima disaster, UK flooding 2007) have shown what dire consequences can ensue when weak links are overlooked.

Engineers, policy makers, designers and planners are some of the key professions shaping the future of the urban world. The decisions they make today will often affect many generations to come. As such it is essential that their decision be backed by knowledge which is both scientifically sound and also fully aware of the human factors inherent in urban issues.

The first international conference in Urban Sustainability and Resilience will bring together world experts from across a wide range of engineering, science and social science disciplines with three main objectives:

  • Bring together a strong research community committed to address some of the most pressing issues that human societies have ever faced;

  • Take stock of the current state of knowledge in the field of urban sustainability and resilience

  • Put forward a coherent future research agenda in the field.

The central themes of the conference will be:

  • Facets of urban resilience

  • Integrating and engineering sustainable and resilient urban systems

  • Feeding the city

  • Towards a low-carbon urban environment

The deadline for the Call for Abstracts is 4th July 2012 and can be viewed here.  For further information and registration, please email conference@usar-conference-2012.org or visit www.usar-conference-2012.org.

London has a long and distinguished history in pioneering large infrastructure projects and advancing research that together have enhanced urban resilience and enabled growth. In Victorian times, Sir Joseph Bazalgette and Sir John Snow led the world with the construction of the most extensive underground sewer network and the foundation of the science of epidemiology, respectively. Today, global corporations and local communities are playing a similar role by investing in new technology and enhancing our “natural” infrastructure. This photo exhibition is a snapshot of urban life in a 21stcentury global city in support of the 1st International Conference on Urban Sustainability and Resilience at University College London.

Colin Cafferty is an emerging environmental photographer based in Hackney, East London interested in engaging the public on energy, sustainability and environmental issues through creative means. He recently graduated with an MSc degree in Climate Change from Birkbeck, University of London and launched his first exhibition “Tilting at windmills”. More information at

Des Gould is a visual essayist on environmental and climate change issues. He is a business coach working on global issues with organizations such as the UN. Recently, Des was appointed as an Ambassador for Earthwatch, and he holds an MSc (London) in Climate Change Management. More information at http://www.desimage.com/

The next talk in the EngD USAR seminar series will be given by Adelaida Prieto, IP Manager from UCL Business on exploiting intellectual property.  The talk will specifically focus on:

What is IP?
How do you protect it?
How can you exploit it?

This subject is relevant to all of our students as all research generates IP.  The talk will take place in Chadwick 218 from 12pm-2pm.   It is compulsory for EngD students to attend.  This is a great networking opportunity.  Informal discussion willl take place over lunch.  Please email j.doogan@ucl.ac.uk to confirm your attendance.
